OAKLAND, Calif., June 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — On Wednesday, June 8, 2016, Public Justice announced five finalists for 2016 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award. This award is considered by the legal community to be one of the most prestigious awards given to consumer attorneys.
Public Justice pursues high impact lawsuits to combat social and economic injustice, protect the earth’s sustainability, and challenge predatory corporate conduct and government abuses.
Public Justice presents its Trial Lawyer of the Year Award to the attorney(s) who have made the greatest contribution to the public interest within the past year by trying or settling a precedent-setting, socially significant case.
Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer (“Gwilliam Ivary”) has been selected for achieving settlement in Andrews v. Lawrence Livermore National Security. In true David v. Goliath style, the team of lawyers at Gwilliam Ivary enlisted the determination and expertise of 4 attorneys in a battle against Lawrence Livermore Labs’ team of 1,200 lawyers. Fierce litigation, which began in 2008, included hundreds of depositions, evaluation of over 300,000 documents, countless client interviews, two separate 60-day trials in 2013, survival of multiple summary judgments, removals and remands to Federal Court and more than $1.5M in case costs. Finally, after intense mediation and negotiation, Gwilliam Ivary was able to achieve a $37.25M settlement on behalf of the wronged workers in September 2015. The defense insisted the settlement be confidential. Gwilliam Ivary refused to agree to confidentiality, arguing the public had a right to know how its tax dollars are being spent.
The Andrews case sheds light on how the George W. Bush administration’s decision to privatize a national security laboratory had devastating impacts on workers and the nation’s safety, as decades of knowledge and experience left the lab as a result of the layoffs.
Gwilliam Ivary is proud of the Andrews team: J. Gary Gwilliam, Randall E. Strauss, and Robert J. Schwartz of Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer in Oakland, Calif.; and Omar Habbas of Habbas & Associates in San Jose, Calif.
The award, which celebrates and recognizes the work of an attorney or team of attorneys working on behalf of individuals and groups that have suffered injustice and harmful abuse, will be presented at the organization’s Annual Gala and Awards Dinner on Sunday, July 24 in Los Angeles.
